Abohar, March 5

With the arrest of Lawrence Bishnoi of Dutaranwali village and three of his accomplices, the police today claimed to have busted an interstate gang.

Lawrence, who was elected as the president of the Students Organisation of Panjab University, had been at large for a few years. Though he was nabbed by the Rajasthan Police last year, he later escaped from the custody of the Punjab Police.

Inspector General of Police Paramraj Singh Umranangal said a team, led by Rajinder Kumar, in charge of the CIA staff, intercepted a car near border village, Shehtirwala, and nabbed the four accused. He said the accused tried to flee by opening fire, but their car crashed into a tree.

Also present at the press meet were Ferozepur Range Deputy Inspector General Amar Chahal and Swapan Sharma, Senior Superintendent of Police, Fazilka.

The accused have been identified as Lawrence, alias Lovinder Bishnoi, (23) of Dutaranwali village in Abohar, Ravinder Singh Kali of Balongi, near Mohali, Shekhawat Shekhu and Surinder Sharma Teenu (24), both from Haryana. The police also claimed to have seized a .38 bore US-made revolver, 25 cartridges, a pistol, 50 gm heroin, a laptop and a bulletproof jacket from Lawrence.

The IG said Lawrence was facing 21 criminal cases in Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan. Ravinder was wanted in 15 cases in the UT and other states and had been declared a proclaimed offender. They have been booked under various Sections of the IPC, the Arms Act and the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. The Abohar police had earlier nabbed three persons, who allegedly funded Lawrence and provided shelter to him.
