Girls grabbed the top positions in the Punjab School Education Board (PSEB) Class X exams, whose result was declared here today. The overall pass percentage was 72.25, up by seven per cent from the previous year.

Simrandeep Kaur of Baba Gurmukh Singh Baba Uttam Singh Senior Secondary School, Khadoor Sahib, stood first with 99.08 per cent marks. Simranpreet Kaur of Prabhakar Senior Secondary School, Chheharta (Amritsar), was ranked second with 98.92 per cent and Arsh Malhotra of Shivalik Model School, Jagraon (Ludhiana), was third with 98.77 per cent.

In the sports category, the top three positions went to Ludhiana students. Tanisha Sharma and Pushwinder Kaur, both of BCM Senior Secondary School, stood joint first with 100 per cent marks. Damanpreet Kaur of Teja Singh Sutantar Memorial Senior Secondary School and her schoolmate Mehakjot Singh claimed the second and third positions, respectively.

Ludhiana district led with 121 students on the provisional merit list, followed by Bathinda and Hoshiarpur (29 students each) and Patiala (28). No student from Mohali and Pathankot districts made it to the merit list.

In terms of the pass percentage, Tarn Taran district topped with 93.24, followed by Gurdaspur (92.05) and Amritsar (89.41). Barnala brought up the rear with 57.79 per cent.

Declaring the result, PSEB chairperson Dr Tejinder Kaur Dhaliwal said the pass percentage this time was 72.25, far better than last year's 65.77.

"A total of 3.42 lakh students appeared in the matric examination, of which 2.47 lakh passed," she said.

Expressing satisfaction over the result, Punjab Education Minister Dr Daljit Singh Cheema congratulated the meritorious students and said the schools and the teachers that had done well would get commendation certificates. The schools with poor results will face the music, he added.
