Muktsar, July 1

Government College, Muktsar, the only government college in the district, is facing a staff crunch.

Of the 100 sanctioned posts of teaching and non-teaching staff, only 25 are filled and the rest, including the post of the principal, has been lying vacant. Some of the posts are served by the staff hired under the Parent Teachers’ Association (PTA).

Of the 52 sanctioned posts of associate professors, just eight are regular appointees, nine are part-timers and 35 posts have been lying vacant. However, the college, as a stop-gap arrangement, used to hire some guest teachers on a contract basis annually to fill some of the positions.

The two posts of librarian are also vacant. Two clerks, who are working in place of five clerks, have to perform the duties of a steno as well.

The college offers courses such as BA, BCom, BSc (medical, non-medical), MA (political science and economics).

Three years ago, three teachers from the college were transferred to Government College for Girls, Jalalabad. However, no replacement has been given in lieu of them.

Prof Mridula Singla, officiating principal, Government College, Muktsar, said, “The issue has been flagged to the higher authorities. Before the start of academic session (mid-July), we will again pursue it.”

The government, as per the rules, can transfer some teachers here for the smooth functioning of the college, which provides education to more than 2,000 students, said some teachers.
