Ludhiana, July 29

Two men accused of murdering Balwinder Kaur, who was facing trial in a case of desecration of Guru Granth Sahib, surrendered in a local court today.

Gurpreet Singh of Amargarh village in Sangrur district and Nihal Singh of Patiala gave themselves up in the court of Judicial Magistrate Lovejinder Kaur. The latter remanded them in police custody till August 3, even though Assistant District Attorney SS Hayder had requested the court to grant 10-day remand.

Balwinder, 45, a resident of Ghawaddi village in the district, was shot dead by two motorcycle-borne men outside the Alamgir village gurdwara on July 26. A case under sections 302 and 34 of the IPC and sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act was registered at Dehlon police station on the statement of her son, Ranjodh Singh.

Balwinder was arrested on the charge of desecrating the Guru Granth Sahib on October 19, 2015. About two months later, she was released on bail.
