NRI, father booked for marriage fraud

FAZILKA: Six persons have been booked for duping a man of Rs 36 lakh and 20-tola gold on the pretext of sending him to the US after his marriage to an NRI.

Six persons have been booked for duping a man of Rs 36 lakh and 20-tola gold on the pretext of sending him to the US after his marriage to an NRI.

Kuljit Singh of Fattuwala village in Jalalabad subdivision said Raghuvir Singh of Amritsar approached him for marrying the latter’s US-based daughter Manpreet Kaur Sohal. Raghuvir and others asked Kuljit, a regional manager in a private pharmaceutical company to arrange Rs 40-50 lakh.

Kuljit paid Rs 36 lakh and 200-gm gold and was married to Sohal on February 28, 2016. He claimed that Manpreet left for the US on March 10, 2016, promising to make arrangements for his immigration. But she did not call him even after over a year, he alleged.

Raghuvir, Manpreet, Harjit Singh and Parminderjit Kaur of Amritsar city, Sukhbir Singh and Harjit Singh of Moga district have been booked by the Sadar Police, Jalalabad, under Sections 420, 120 B and 506 of the IPC.

Complainant duped of Rs 36 lakh

  • Kuljit Singh of Fattuwala village in Jalalabad alleged Raghuvir Singh of Amritsar approached him for marrying his US-based daughter Manpreet Kaur Sohal. 
  • Kuljit had to pay Rs 36 lakh and 200-gm gold to get married to Sohal on February 28, 2016. 
  • Manpreet left for the US on March 10, 2016, and never contacted him
