For Chandigarh’s Navjot Kaur (29), a dream wedding turned out to be a nightmare. Her husband, Jagjit Singh from Jalandhar, had been married thrice earlier. He started threatening and assaulting her with the motive of usurping her property.

She, however, fought back to get Jagjit arrested. Sources said he was arrested from Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi tonight. A press conference is likely to be held tomorrow to confirm the arrest.

In January, her parents uploaded her profile on a matrimonial website. The family was approached by Jagjit, who claimed to be settled in California.

The couple got married on February 5. Jagjit brought her to Jalandhar but instead of taking her home in Green Park, took her to Grand Horizon Hotel near the bus stand.

“He kept me in the hotel for eight days and beat me every day. Since day one, they had put me on drugs and I slept most of the time,” she added.

On the first day of marriage, Jagjit and his family asked her the details of her property and when she refused to say anything, beat her in front of the hotel staff.

Later, Jagjit got the marriage registered in court on March 3. Later, he called her father, Manjit Singh, and demanded to get the latter’s property transferred in his name. Her father, sensing something amiss, asked the couple to accompany him so that formalities could be completed.

On reaching his in-laws house in Chandigarh’s Sector 35, Jagjit said he felt uneasy and left by saying that he had to get his car repaired. He never returned.

Police Commissioner Praveen Sinha said two cases of fraud by Jagjit had been detected. One case is registered in Goraya and another in Sadar police station in the city.
