Patiala, June 28
Patiala MP Dharmvira Gandhi on Tuesday condemned the SAD-BJP government for “downplaying” the drug abuse in the state to “shield” drug mafia.
He demanded the resignation of Health Minister Surjit Kumar Jyani for his “irresponsible and non-factual” reports on the incidence of drug addiction in Punjab and challenged him to come forward for a public debate on the issue concerning the future of Punjab, especially of the youth.
Citing the statements of top government officials trying to underplay the menace, Gandhi also quoted Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal, who in Jalandhar, while referring to a survey conducted under the aegis of AIIMS had claimed that “only 0.06 % of the Punjab population has been found to be on drugs”.
