In view of no directions on demonetised currency notes stashed in “malkhanas” (record room) of police stations, officers are in a fix as to what to do with the money.

Their dilemma is — whether or not to get the money exchanged; if yes, whether they need permission from court or a nod from their seniors will do.

Money confiscated in cases of robbery, gambling, theft and corruption is deposited in “malkhanas” and later deposited in the Treasury. In certain cases of bribe, the currency notes are kept under seal. Money cannot be disposed of till the cases are settled.

“I have Rs2 lakh in Rs500 and Rs1,000 notes. When I asked my senior, he asked me to wait. After almost a week, I am still awaiting his reply. I am afraid action will be taken against me if the notes are not exchanged before the deadline,” an SHO said.

IPS Sahota, Director, Bureau of Investigations, said, “Since the matter has been brought to my knowledge, I will issue directions soon. Let me discuss the matter with the DGP.”
