The Punjab government on Friday increased ad valorem duty on electricity by 2 per cent on Friday, making power 25 paise more expensive per unit.
The state government’s latest notification said that the increased levy would be applicable to all categories of consumers and would be limited to rural areas.
The additional burden, which will be about Rs 150 crore, is estimated to bring total duty collection for electricity to Rs 1,125 crore. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited will use the money to subsidise electricity for agriculture.
