GURDASPUR: Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira today said his party accepted the challenge of Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar for a debate.

Leader of Opposition Sukhpal Singh Khaira today said his party accepted the challenge of Congress candidate Sunil Jakhar for a debate.

Khaira said Jakhar could choose the place, time and duration of the debate and also the name of the leaders who would accompany him. “If he doesn’t want me there, he has the option to choose between Bhagwant Mann and Maj Gen Suresh Khajuria (retd). Let people of the Gurdaspur parliamentary constituency judge for themselves which party will give them a better deal,” he said.

Jakhar had yesterday thrown a challenge to AAP and the BJP to have a debate “so that people get to know the weaknesses and strengths of parties contesting the bypoll”.

Khaira said his party was a votary of clean electoral politics sans money power, drugs and muscle power.

“I have repeatedly announced that my party would neither hold big rallies nor splurge on propaganda to woo voters. It is a good sign if Jakhar also stands for the same values. Holding public debates through media on the pattern of developed countries will only strengthen our democracy,” he said.
