Fazilka, April 16
Unloading of government-procured wheat remained suspended in Fazilka town on Monday following a dispute between labourers and contractors. Members of the Punjab Foodgrain and Allied Workers Union went on strike against the contractual system.
Union president Balwant Singh said the tenders for unloading the material should had been allotted to the labour unions instead of private persons resulting in financial losses to them.
However, unloading of wheat procured by the FCI continued as usual as the tenders were allotted to FCI unions.
Long queues of loaded truck and tractor-trailers were seen outside the godowns of Punjab State Warehousing Corporation, Pungrain, Markfed and other procurement agencies.
District Food and Supply Controller, Fazilka, Geeta Bishambu said the issue would be resolved soon.
