The police today arrested sarpanch Daljit Kaur’s husband Paramjit Singh and son Gurjit Singh on the charge of assaulting a pregnant nurse at a private hospital in Baghapurana on Thursday.

The nurse, Ramandeep Kaur, was attacked after she refused to give them preferential treatment and asked them to wait for getting a patient admitted.

Local DSP Jaspal Singh said Paramjit and Gurjit were arrested from the bus stand at Rajeana village. A preliminary investigation revealed that Paramjit was a constable in the Punjab Police and had retired a couple of years ago. Later, he entered village-level politics.

Talking to mediapersons in the presence of the police, Paramjit said he was not associated with the SAD. “My wife was elected sarpanch of Alamwala village as an Independent,” he said.

Tirath Singh Mahla, SAD district president, claimed that Paramjit, his wife and son were not members of the ruling party. “We condemn the incident and want the police to take stern action against the accused as they have no respect for women,” he said.

Meanwhile, AAP MPs Bhagwant Mann and Sadhu Singh met the nurse at Kotla Mehar Singh Wala village in the district this evening.
