The bypoll to Shahkot Assembly seat in Punjab will be held on May 28, a spokesperson for the state Chief Electoral Officer said on Thursday.
The spokesperson said while the polling would be held on May 28, the counting of votes would take place on May 31. The code of conduct would be enforced in Jalandhar district with immediate effect. The last date for submission of nomination papers is May 10 while the last date for withdrawal would be May 14.
The bypoll has been necessitated following the passing away of veteran Shiromani Akali Dal leader Ajit Singh Kohar in February this year.
Besides Shahkot, bypolls to nine Assembly and four Lok Sabha seats across 10 states would be held on May 28, the Election Commission said. The parliamentary bypolls will be held in Kairana (Uttar Pradesh), Palghar and Bhandara-Gondiya (Maharashtra) and to the Nagaland seat.
The seats where Assembly bypolls will be held are Noorpur (Uttar Pradesh), Jokihat (Bihar), Gomia and Silli (Jharkhand), Chengannur (Kerala), Palus Kadegaon (Maharashtra), Ampati (Meghalaya), Tharali (Uttarakhand) and Maheshtala (West Bengal).
