A Punjabi singer and his accomplice were today reportedly arrested with 1.5 kg heroin in Mattewara village of Ludhiana.

The police claim to have recovered a .32 bore revolver and five live bullets, a mobile phone with Italy number from their possession.

Those arrested have been identified as 24-year-old Gurjant Singh, who has launched a Punjabi music album, of Jajja village in Amritsar, and 35-year-old Surjit Singh alias Kalu, a farmer of Mawa village in Amritsar. Following a tip-off, STF Ludhiana incharge Inspector Harbans Singh had laid a checkpoint on Rahon road at Mattewara where the duo was allegedly caught with drugs. A case under sections 22/25/27A, 29/61/85 of the NDPS Act and sections 25/54/59 of the Arms Act has been registered against them.

STF Assistant Inspector General Mukhwinder Singh Bhullar said Gurjant had been ‘smuggling’ drugs for the past six months. “His brother Nirmal Singh is also allegedly involved in ‘smuggling’. The cops are on the lookout for him too,” he said.

The police said Surjit was allegedly involved in smuggling for the past two years. Bhullar said the duo was allegedly in contact with smugglers in Pakistan, Afghanistan, Vancouver and Dubai on WhatsApp.
