The police today formed a four-member SIT for investigating the incident wherein a group of Jat leaders led by an Akali sarpanch and a police constable allegedly attacked Dalit families at Achint Kot village in the Attari block over a land dispute on May 26. The police have also suspended head constable Zorawar Singh deputed at the Khasa police station.

Jasdeep Singh Saini, SSP, said the police had included Section 354-B of the IPC (use of criminal force against woman for compelling her to be naked) in the FIR.

Earlier, the police had booked around 20 persons, including Akali sarpanch Amrik Singh and Zorawar Singh, under Sections 323, 324, 148, 149 and 506 of the IPC and Sections 3, 4 of the SC/ST Act. The police had allegedly overlooked the alleged molestation of a woman during the attack. Besides, the charges of attempt to murder were also not included, it was alleged.

The SSP said they had sought the opinion of doctors and appropriate action would be taken as per their reports. He said the police had arrested around 10 persons in the case and weapons used in the crime had been seized.
