Six members of two families, including three women and three children, were feared drowned after the car in which they travelling fell into Sirhind Canal near Garhi bridge in Ludhiana on Monday.
There were seven persons in the car, but the driver managed to come out of water and was admitted to Civil Hospital at Machhiwara.
As per information, the car occupants who hailed from Ambala had come at Rahon to attend a marriage in their relation. They were returning to Ambala when the driver lost control over the vehicle near Garhi bridge and it fell into the canal at about 6.30am.
On receipt of information, police teams reached the spot and started rescue operations. The body of one woman has been recovered and efforts are on to recover the remaining bodies.
Khanna SSP Gurpreet Singh Gill who reached the spot along with the Samrala DSP said they are trying to ascertain the cause of the incident and have deputed divers to recover the bodies. So far, body of one woman has been taken out of water, he added.
