Hoshiarpur, September 2

A speeding Innova mowed down five persons outside Shri Durga Devi temple on the Jalandhar-Pathankot National Highway this evening.

The temple society had organised langar for Manimahesh pilgrims. Around 4 pm, a group was sitting on chairs outside the temple when Ludhiana resident Ashish Kumar lost control of his SUV while overtaking another vehicle from the wrong side. The Innova dragged the victims for more than 100 metres before stopping.

Karnail Singh (70), Gandharv Singh (75) and Ram Sharan (60) of Latifpur village and Darshan Singh (60) of Alipur village died on the spot. Former sarpanch Jatinder Singh (55) of Khanpur village succumbed to injuries in a hospital. Balwant Singh (70), a resident of Lohgarh village, was taken to the Mukerian Civil Hospital, from where he was referred to Government Medical College, Amritsar.

Mukerian SHO Jaswinder Pal Singh said the driver had been arrested and the SUV impounded.
