Tail-end farmers seek adequate water supply

ABOHAR: Hundreds of farmers, who met Irrigation Department Superintending Engineer Harlabh Singh Chahal during his visit here on Saturday to examine the status of canal water availability, expressed dissatisfaction over the prevailing facilities.

Abohar, June 17

Hundreds of farmers, who met Irrigation Department Superintending Engineer Harlabh Singh Chahal during his visit here on Saturday to examine the status of canal water availability, expressed dissatisfaction over the prevailing facilities.

Speaking to the official, the farmers said the previous government had not released funds to clean water bodies that had wild growth of shrubs. They said breaches developed repeatedly as only ad hoc measures were taken to plug weak points.

Chahal said the weak points would be plugged using cement concrete mixture. The department had planned another closure in consultation with PPCC president Sunil Jakhar from June 21 to June 29 from Sarawan headworks to Abohar headworks to take up cleaning of sub-canals in Abohar. — OC
