A state-level team on Wednesday surveyed the Buddha Nullah and found various disposal points through which waste was being released into it by dyeing units and dairy complexes.

The team, led by Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Punjab Municipal Infrastructure Development Company (PMIDC), Ajoy Sharma inspected the disposal points.

According to MC officials, who were present during the inspection, the team found an illegal disposal point through which ‘untreated water from dyeing units’ was being dumped into the nullah. PPCB officials were pulled up and directed to collect samples of the untreated waste from the dyeing units, it is learnt.

Ajoy Sharma, along with Deputy Commissioner Pradeep Kumar Aggarwal, MC Commissioner Jaskiran Singh and PPCB officials, visited the dairy complexes to check as to how untreated waste was being dumped into the nullah.

The team inspected sewage treatment plants (STPs) at Jamalpur, Ballo Ke and Bhattian. It directed the MC officials to keep a check on the functioning of laboratories at the STPs so that water sampling could be done properly.

The MC’s untreated waste is also released through various disposal points into the nullah as the STPs have not been upgraded.

MC Commissioner Jaskiran Singh said earlier, a committee at the CM level had been formed to know the reasons behind the pollution so that requisite measures could be taken.

After the survey, the team met MLAs. Cabinet minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu said the MLAs had given their suggestions to make the Buddha Nullah pollution-free.
