Patiala, February 24

Three students of Thapar University were killed and one was critically injured in a car accident in the wee hours today.

The mishap occurred around 12.30 am near the Dhindsa petrol pump on the Bhadson road.

The speeding Swift Dzire they were travelling in hit a pillar and then crashed into a shop.

Three youths died on the spot, while the fourth was taken to Rajindra Hospital by nearby residents.

The deceased were identified as Manikant (25), a resident of Century Enclave, Patiala, Amandeep Singh (23) of Zirakpur and Arundeep Rana (22), a resident of Naya Nangal, Ropar.

Injured Mrigank Mandal (25), who hails from Murshidabad (West Bengal), had come here for a re-appear exam.

The students were staying in a local paying guest accommodation.

Amandeep and Arundeep were the only sons of their parents.

The bodies were extricated from the vehicle with a car cutter. The speedometer had stopped at 180 km/hour.

The students had reportedly taken their friend Kulbir Singh’s car without his consent. Kulbir was also staying at the PG accommodation.

In a statement, he told the police that the Swift Dzire was hit by another vehicle.

A case was registered under Sections 279 (rash driving) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) at Patiala’s Tripuri police station on the basis of Kulbir’s statement.

The bodies were handed over to the family members after a post-mortem examination.

Tripuri Station House Officer Devinder Parkash said the police had scanned the CCTV footage in the entire area and established that the driver had lost control of the speeding car.

Rajindra Hospital’s Medical Superintendent Dr BR Brar said Mayank had sustained a liver injury and fractured his thigh bone. He is being kept under observation by the doctors.
