Sangrur, August 20

Following the recovery of torn pages of Quran from near three different mosques in Malerkotla today, security has been beefed up in the city.

Sources said some locals found the torn pages of Quran scattered on roads near three different mosques located near bus stand, grain market and new court complex in the early hours today.

DSP Yogi Raj along with his team reached the spot, while SSP Mandeep Sidhu held meetings with locals on the matter.

The SSP said: “We have registered a case under Section 295-A IPC against unidentified persons. We have formed 15 teams to crack the case. We are scanning all CCTVs near the crime spots.”

Members of the Muslim community buried the torn pages at a graveyard on the Ludhiana road.

Local MLA and Cabinet Minister Razia Sultana said: “Some miscreants have tried to disturb peace, but our government will take strict action against the culprits.” She said CCTVs would be installed across Malerkotla at a cost of Rs 50 lakh to prevent such incidents in future.

On June 24 last year, torn pages of two new copies of Quran were found scattered on the Khanna Road. A case was registered against AAP MLA Naresh Yadav. The matter is still pending in a Sangrur court. The next date of hearing is August 21.
