With the BJP-SAD alliance getting a two-third majority in recently concluded Municipal Council elections, the tussle for the coveted post of civic body president has intensified. Several aspirants have begun gathering support to lay claim to the post.

The main contenders for the president’s post rushed to Chandigarh on Friday to meet Surjit Kumar Jyani, local MLA and Health Minister, and Local Bodies Minister Anil Joshi to seek his support. For the post of the president, the front runners are former MC President Anil Sethi, former Chairman of Market Committee Ashok Jairath, Senior BJP leaders and three-time councillor Rakesh Dhuria and senior BJP leader Ramesh Verma.

“The final decision on the matter will be taken once a notification is issued,” said Anil Sethi, former President of Municipal Council, Fazilka. Sources said the notification would be issued next week. Of the total 25 wards in Fazilka, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Shiromani Akal Dal (SAD) have won in 19 wards. The BJP won from 18 wards and SAD one.
