A 28-year-old farmer committed suicide in Mansa district on Friday. Bikker Singh, a resident of Maujia village, was in depression over his inability to repay the money that he owed to moneylenders.

Punjab Kisan Union leader Balkaran Singh Balli stated that Bikker owed Rs 9 lakh to bank, cooperative society and private moneylenders. “He was hoping to repay a part of the debt by selling his wheat produce. But the wheat yield was not up to his expectation. Facing financial crunch, he had sold soil from his fields due to which the level of his fields was low and that affected the crop,” Balli said. Bikker committed suicide by consuming poison at his home.
