Villagers foil bid to loot ATM

Residents of Sarali Khurd village, 10 km from here, thwarted the armed robbers’ bid to rob an ATM of the State Bank of India last late evening.

The bank branch is situated on the Tarn Taran-Patti road in the village. The robbers opened fire on the villagers to run away from the spot.

DSP Sohan Singh said the police have registered a case under Sections 457, 380, 427, 511, 506 and 336 of the IPC and Sections 25, 27, 54 and 59 of the Arms Act.

Sukhpreet Singh, night chowkidar of the bank, said the armed masked robbers after disconnecting the CCTV camera with the help of the strong belts uprooted the ATM.

He said the robbers, who were about seven in number, came in two vehicles and were trying to upload the ATM in their vehicle when the villagers gathered on the spot and warned the robbers, who opened fire on the residents and ran away from the spot.

3-kg poppy plants seized

Tarn Taran: The police arrested Balwinder Singh of Talwandi Budh Singh Wala village and seized 3-kg poppy plants from his possession on Thursday. The police have registered a case under Sections 15, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act against the accused. Sub-Inspector Harpal Singh said the accused was on foot when he was nabbed by the police.
