The molasses’ spill had raised concerns regarding the endangered Indus river dolphins.

Chandigarh, May 19

There was some respite on Saturday when state wildlife officials spotted a pair of dolphins in the Beas. The spilling of molasses from a sugar factory into the river had killed a large number of fish and there were concerns regarding endangered Indus river dolphins, which are less than 2,000 in the entire world.

Kuldip Kumar, state’s Chief Wildlife Warden, confirmed that a pair of Indus river dolphins was spotted near Karmowala village. It is the same spot where the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in its survey earlier this month had spotted a group of dolphins. As per a recent survey by the WWF, there were 5-11 Indus river dolphins in the Beas.

“While doing a survey of the affected area, our team spotted two dolphins around 1.30 pm,” Kuldip Kumar said. The survey had to be called off as there was a sudden storm in the area. He said the teams would resume the survey on Sunday. (Vishav Bharti)
