Canadian Member of Parliament (MP) Kamal Khera, who is on a visit to Ludhiana, today said Canada had liberal policies for immigrants from other countries. Additional steps would be taken for making policies more immigrant-friendly, she said, while speaking to The Tribune.

Commenting on her election as a Liberal MP from Brampton West, Khera said she had received tremendous support from the Indian, particularly Punjabi, community during the elections. She was a community volunteer before she joined politics. With a Bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Nursing, she worked as a registered nurse at a health centre in Toronto.

The Indian-origin MP from Brampton wants to make Lohri festivities celebrating the birth of girl child an annual feature in Brampton.

“I believe that empowerment of women is very important. And the key to women empowerment lies in educating the girl child and providing her equal opportunities.”

She said she was visiting Ludhiana after nearly eight-nine years. Punjab has changed a lot in the last decade, she said. “I’m amazed at the sheer number of cars on roads.” On the flip side, the traffic is chaotic. Yet, what remained unchanged was the warmth and friendliness of Punjabis, she added.
