Patiala, November 27

Panicky Samana policemen today opened fire at a car that jumped a barricade, killing a 22-year-old orchestra dancer, shortly after the jailbreak.

Neha Sharma died of a bullet injury. Two girls accompanying her escaped unhurt. A  youth on a bike, Chanderbhan of Dirba, was injured with a stray bullet piercing his leg. The incident, that occurred at 11 am after the jailbreak, led to public outrage.

The girls were on their way to a wedding function in Arno village. Though the police have registered a case against unknown persons, video footage showed the naka was manned by four policemen and a Home Guard.

The car driver told the police he did not notice the naka and, hence, it took him time to slow down.

But the police claimed the driver had tried to run over a constable who signalled him to stop. Eyewitnesses said a police team headed by ASI Simarjit Singh put up a naka near Ramnagar in Samana when a speeding Dezire car coming from Samana was signalled to stop. As the driver tried to divert the car, a policeman standing 100 metres from the naka fired twice from his AK-47.

“One shot hit Neha in the chest, killing her on the spot. The second bullet pierced through the youth on the bike,” said a police official. Commuters chased the police team that fled in a Scorpio, leaving behind the armed Home Guard. The girl’s body was taken to the Government Rajindra Hospital for postmortem where SAD (A) and AAP workers raised anti-police slogans.
