Hidden world: The megacolony was traced in the Danger Islands on the east side of Antarctic islands. Satellite images gave the initial idea about the population of penguins, which later was followed by curious expeditors, who confirmed the presence of the colony

Scientists were in for a pleasant surprise in the beginning of March as a supercolony of penguins was discovered in Antarctica. Their number: A whopping 1.5 million or 15 lakh. The presence of Adelie penguins put aside fear of 40,000 dead, the news that worried environmentalists in October last year. The photographs, clicked using drones specially adapted for freezing temperatures, capture the size of the colony. More the merrier.
