Congress Victories In Punjab

AMBALA: Declaration of election result in the Punjab commenced to-day. Congress nominees out triumphant winning 20 of the 24 results announced. With one Congressman already elected unopposed, the party position is: Congress 21, Independent 1, Zamindar League 1, Communist 1 and Forward Bloc 1.

Congress scored its first major victory when Sardar Partap Singh Karon, State Congress President, was elected to State Assembly polling 14, 788 voters against his chief Akali Dal rival, Sardar Umrao Singh, who polled 13,381. The Patti constituency from which they contested had a total voting strength of 51, 624. The ballot papers of two other candidates are still being counted.

Counting of votes in this border state of the Punjab commenced this morning about four days after the polling in general in all the constituencies had concluded.

In Ambala city, a Muslim candidate was put up by the Congress without any Muslim voters and with a predominantly refugee vote. The seat has been won by a huge majority by the Congress candidate.

The Congress candidate defeated four other candidates, including the Jan Sangh, Socialists, K.M.P.P. and an independent.

In Ambala Cantonment, the Congress candidate, Mr Dev Raj Anand, who is reported to have secured 13, 377 out of 27, 300 votes, has defeated eight other candidates, including Jan Sangh, Akali, Socialist and independents.

Counting in one of the keenly watched constituencies i.e. Patti from where the state Congress Chief, Sardar Pratap Singh is contesting, is also proceeding and the results are likely to be announced in the course of the day.

8. Mr Teg Ram (Khuan Sarwar, Ferozepore)

9. Mr Balwant Rai (Hissar City)

10. Mr Ralla Ram (Mukerian)

11. Mr Mansa Ram Kuhtiala (Una)

12. Mr Gurditta Mal (Palwal)

13. Mr Sarup Singh (Narnaul)

14. Mr Mool Chand (Samalkha)

15. Mr Kesho Dass (Pathankot)

16. Mr Sahib Singh (Rania)

17. Mr Gajraj Singh (Gurgaon)

18. Mr Shiv Singh (Rania)

19. Mr Narinjan Dass Dhimon (Phillaur)

20. Mr Kanhya Lal (Palampur),

According to unofficial reports two other Congress candidates, Jathedar Sohan Singh Jalalusman and Dr Satya Paul, have also been elected.
