One hundred and fifty-two out of the 154 Assembly constituencies and 22 Parliamentary  constituencies went to the polls today. Polling, which commenced at 8 a.m. and concluded at 5 p.m passed off peacefully

There were, however, a few minor incidents which did not materially affect polling. In Gurgaon there was a clash.

For the first time polling in Punjab was held on a single day. In the first general election in 1952 it was spread over 27 days and in the second over18 days.

The counting of votes will begin tomorrow and the first round of result is expected to reach the Chief Electoral Officer of the state at Chandigarh by 3 p.m.  tomorrow. The State Election Department has decided to display the results as they are received on a board in Sector 22, the most populous sector in the Capital.
