Gaviria fastest on Day 4 as Van Avermaet stays in yellow

Tour de France debutant Fernando Gaviria claimed his second stage win on Tuesday when he outsprinted his rivals in the fourth stage. The Quick-Step Floors rider launched his sprint far from the line, and made sure of the win with a second burst of speed to beat Peter Sagan and German Andre Greipel into second and third place, respectively. “We wanted to wait to the last moment to launch but it was too hard. I'm really happy anyway,” said Gaviria. Belgian Greg van Avermaet retained the overall leader's yellow jersey.

Ponnappa-Rankireddy progress in Thailand Open

Indian shuttlers had a bad day in office in the qualifiers of the Thailand Open even as the mixed doubles pair of Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Ashwini Ponnappa entered the second round of the main draw.  Ponnappa and Rankireddy defeated the Indonesian pair of Akbar Bintang Cahyono and Winny Oktavina Kandow 19-21 21-14 21-17 to progress to the second round of the main draw.

India bag four medals at Asian archery, finish third

India bagged three silver medals and a bronze to finish joint-third with Iran behind toppers Korea and hosts Chinese Taipei in the Asia Cup World Ranking Tournament Stage 3 here today. On the concluding day, the men’s recurve team won a silver before Divya Dhayal finished second in the compound category. The women’s recurve team defeated Japan 6-2 to win a bronze.

Pak opener Shehzad faces ban on failed drug test  

Pakistan opener Ahmed Shehzad failed a drug test conducted during a domestic tournament in April, the country's cricket authorities confirmed Tuesday, and could face a ban of up to four years.  The offence is the latest in a long litany of Pakistani players charged with doping, and is a severe blow to the 26-year-old's stuttering career. — Agencies
