Rio Olympics-bound Chain Singh emerged as the star marksman of the 12th South Asian Games as he picked up his third individual gold of the competition by winning the men’s 50m rifles 3 positions title here on Sunday.

There were only two gold medals on offer in shooting today and the Indians picked up both. The second gold came in the team event of the men’s 50m rifle 3 positions.

The 26-year-old Chain shot a total of 453.3 to win the gold as he once again upstaged his senior teammate Gagan Narang, who took the silver with a total score of 450.3. Chain had earlier won the individual gold in the 50m rifle prone and the 10m air rifle event.

“I still need to improve upon my scores if I have to do well in top-level competitions ahead of the Olympics. But these three individual gold in the SAG will surely boost my confidence going ahead,” said Chain. After today’s clean sweep, India’s medal count in shooting rose to 21 gold, nine silver and eight bronze.

The gold rush continued in triathlon as well with India bagging the top spot in the mixed relay team event. The Indian team of Pallavi Retiwala, Dilip Kumar, Thoudam Sarojini Devi and Dhiraj Sawant won the gold with a combined timing of one hour, 24 minutes and 31 seconds (01:24:31) on the final day of the triathlon competitions.

The boxers also packed a powerful punch by dominating the ring. London Olympics bronze-medallist Mary Kom led the charge as six Indian boxers stormed into the final with comprehensive wins. On a comeback trail after recovering from an injury, Mary Kom’s 51kg category bout lasted less than 40 seconds as won via technical knockout.

In the men’s competition, Glasgow Commonwealth silver medallist

Devendro Singh (49kg) defeated Sri Lanka’s Thiwana Ranasinghe. World Championship bronze medallist Shiva Thapa (56kg) did well to negate the advantage his opponent, Mohammad Ohiduzzaman of Bangladesh, enjoyed in terms of height.  He defended himself well, and landed some powerful jabs to move ahead.     In the 75kg category, Vikas Krishan outclassed his Afghanistan opponent Folad S Wali Shah 3-0. Manoj Kumar (64kg) prevailed over Tshering Wangchuk of Bhutan to make the final. — IANS
