Five girls from Jind have been selected in the Indian handball team that will take part in the Asian Women Handball championship to be held at Indonesia from March 14 to 22.

Prior to the championship, they will attend a national coaching camp at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) Centre, Lucknow, from March 2 to 10. Pinki, Sonia, Ritu, Rimpy and Gurmail have been practicing in Narwana stadium for last 10 years. Belonging to rural area, the girls say they have been getting full support from their families, but the government has not been forthcoming in supporting them.

Sonia has been recruited as head constable in Haryana Police. Ritu is a M.Sc Zoology student of Kurukshetra university, Gurmail and Pinky are college students.

“If government gives us job, we are confident that we would be able to win medals in international competitions,” said Rimpy, a BA-II student of S.D College, Narwana. These girls were also part of Haryana’s gold medal winning team in the recently-concluded National Games.
