Five Indians in World Junior women''s boxing finals

The Indian boxers continued to set the ring ablaze in the AIBA Women's Junior World Championships with five of them advancing to the finals on Friday.

The Indian boxers continued to set the ring ablaze in the AIBA Women's Junior World Championships with five of them advancing to the finals on Friday. Soniya (48 kg), Savita (50 kg), Mandeep Sandhu (52 kg), Sakshi (54 kg) and Niharika Gonella (70 kg) entered the finals, making it a brilliant day for India. Soniya defeated Thailand's Phunsang Chiranchaya 2-1, while Savita got the better of Turkey's Cumentor Ayten 3-0. Mandeep edged past French girl Wonyou Johanna 2-1. Sakshi, on the other hand, outpunched Thailand's Tintabthai Preedakamon via a Technical Knockout. Niharika defeated China's Yue Yuan through a Technical Knockout to enter the summit clash.

Thrower Kamalpreet breaks own nat’l record  

Kamalpreet Singh improved upon his hammer throw national record with an effort of 72.86m while finishing third at the Tuscon Elite Classic in Arizona, United States. Kamalpreet, participating as an unattached athlete, came up with his best throw in his first of the six attempts at the University of Arizona at Tuscon. Kamalpreet’s effort was the third best this season so far among the Asian hammer throwers. He, however, could not find a place in the Indian team for the June 3-7 Asian Athletics Championships in Wuhan, China.  This was second time in two months that Kamalpreet had improved upon his national record. The 27-year-old Punjab thrower had registered 70.37m at the same venue in May last year, which was the national record till he threw 70.38m at an invitational event at Sacramento State Open in the United States in March.

Bangladesh skipper faces race to be fit for India Test  

Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim faces a race against time to be fit for the one-off Test against India after the he was advised a week's rest to recover from a finger injury. The 28-year-old injured the third finger on his right hand in the opening Test against Pakistan last month and ignored the advice to skip the next match at Dhaka to deny himself full recovery.

Yuki suffered a 4-6, 3-6 defeat against Germany's Tim Puetz while Ramkumar Ramanathan was routed 2-6, 0-6 by America's Jared Donaldson. Russian Evgeny Donskoy ousted Somdev Devvarman 6-2, 6-4 in his second round. The Indian challenge at the second Grand Slam of the season will be led by world No. 1  Sania Mirza in the women’s doubles. — Agencies
