NSW batsman becomes first concussion sub in cricket 

New South Wales opening batsman Daniel Hughes has become the first player to be substituted during a match under Cricket Australia’s new concussion protocol. Hughes was replaced by Nick Larkin during the One-Day Cup elmination final between New South Wales and Victoria Friday after being struck on the helmet by a bouncer from Test fast bowler Peter Siddle.    Larkin wasn’t required to face a ball as New South Wales won the rain-affected match by 31 runs.

Brazilian club win Subroto title in front of Rivaldo

Watched by the great Rivaldo, Brazil’s Club Atletico Paraneanse won the Subroto Cup Junior Boys (U-17) trophy after beating Army Boys, Bengaluru, 1-0 in the final. Bruno struck the goal four minutes into the match and the Brazilians defended it for the next 66 minutes to romp home winners at the Ambedkar Stadium.

Late Messi penalty seals dramatic Barca win

Lionel Messi squeezed home a stoppage-time penalty to grab a thrilling 3-2 win for champions Barcelona in a controversial La Liga match at Valencia on Saturday. Messi scored against Valencia for the 10th season in a row to put the visitors ahead in the 22nd minute although teammate Luis Suarez was in an offside position and obstructing the view of goalkeeper Diego Alves.

Kuznetsova wins to claim last WTA Finals berth

Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova successfully defended her title in the Kremlin Cup defeating Australian Daria Gavrilova in the final, thus achieving the last available ticket to the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) Finals in Singapore. Kuznetsova defeated Gavrilova 6-2, 6-1 in 72 minutes. Kuznetsova will join German Angelique Kerber, Polish Agniezska Radwanska, Romanian Simona Halep, Czech Karolina Pliskova, Spanish Garbine Muguruza, American Madison Keys and Slovak Dominika Cibulkova in Singapore. — Agencies
