Indian women storm into final

Shanghai: The Indian women’s recurve team shocked top seeds Germany 5-3 to set up a title clash with Chinese Taipei in the first stage of the Archery World Cup at Yuanshen Stadium.

Shanghai, April 29

The Indian women’s recurve team shocked top seeds Germany 5-3 to set up a title clash with Chinese Taipei in the first stage of the Archery World Cup at Yuanshen Stadium.

The Indian men, too, are in the medal hunt in the team and mixed pairs events of the recurve category. However, the compound archers failed to progress to the medal round.

The trio of Deepika Kumari, Laishram Bombayla Devi and Laxmirani Majhi bounced back from the disappointing run in the individual events yesterday to down their German opponents in their semifinal contest. The seventh-seeded Chinese Taipei thrashed higher-ranked Russia 6-0 in the other semifinal.

The Indian trio shot three 9s, followed by three Xs to take a 2-0 lead in the first set. The German team recovered in the second set, garnering 57 points, but the Indian team matched the score to take a 3-1 lead. There was a minor blip in the performance of the Indians in the third set, when they shot two 8s, and the Germans levelled the score at 3-3.

The Indians, however, were back in their element in the decider, and wrapped up the issue 5-3. The men’s team of Atanu Das, Jayanta Talukdar and Mangal Singh Champia was pipped by second-seeded Netherlands 5-4 in the shoot off (30-28) in the semifinals.

India had beaten France 5-3 in the first round, while in the quarters they downed 11th seeds Germany 6-2. They will face ninth seeds Britain in the bronze play-off.  — PTI
