Mountaineer Harbhajan Singh was honoured with the prestigious Tenzing Norgay National Adventure Award for Lifetime Achievement.
Apart from Singh, Tashi Malik, Nungshi Malik and Debasish Biswas were awarded for land adventure while Ritu Kishor Kedia and B. Rajkumar were awarded for water and air adventure respectively.
Singh, an Inspector General in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), is the 12th Himveer of the para-military force to be awarded the honour.
Hailing from Dholowal village of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, Singh was born in 1956. He has participated in three successful expeditions to Mt Everest. After joining ITBP in 1980, Singh developed into a top judo player and won a gold in the national championship.
Twins Tashi, Nungshi make Sonepat proud
Twins Tashi Malik and Nungshi Malik shifted from Anwali in Sonepat district to settle in Dehradun. On May 19, 2013, the duo climbed Mt. Everest and became the first twins to scale the world’s highest peak. Daughters of Col Virender Singh Malik (retd), the duo took to mountaineering after completing a basic course from NIM,Uttarkashi in 2009. — Agencies
