Nair replaces injured Dhawan for third Test

Karnataka batsman Karun Nair today replaced injured Shikhar Dhawan in the Indian squad for the third and final Test against New Zealand, starting on October 8.

Karnataka batsman Karun Nair today replaced injured Shikhar Dhawan in the Indian squad for the third and final Test against New Zealand, starting on October 8. Nair, who played two ODIs for India, got his chance to be a part of the Test squad after Dhawan was ruled out of the third Test following a minor fracture on his left thumb. Dhawan sustained the injury when he was hit twice by New Zealand pace spearhead Trent Boult on the hand in the second innings. Dhawan has been recommended 15 days rest, ruling him out from the final Test.

Viswanathan Anand played out an easy draw against Evgeny Tomashevsky of Russia in the sixth round to remain at the third spot in the Tal Memorial Chess tournament. This was the only drawn game of  the round as  the players with white pieces ruled the roost. Armenian Levon Aronian tormented Dutch Grandmaster Anish Giri in a fairly one-sided game while Russian Ian Nepomniachtchi was in his element to eke out a fine victory against Shakhriyar Mamedyarov of Azerbaijan.

Armaan’s twin strike help India beat Tigers 3-2

Striker Armaan Qureshi scored two goals to guide India to a 3-2 win over Tassie Tigers and record their third victory in the Australian Hockey League. In the 10th minute, Armaan gave India the breakthrough with a field goal. Two minutes later, Tigers equalised with James Dick finding the net to draw level. India then earned a penalty corner from the next move and Varun Kumar made it count by slotting the ball home to wrest back the lead heading into the first break. India went into the halfway break with a 2-1 lead. Tigers got the equaliser in the 50th minute via a penalty conversion by William Shaw. India struck back four minutes later through Armaan.

HC stays CIC direction to disclose HI sponsorships

The Delhi High Court stayed the Central Information Commission’s (CIC) order directing HI to disclose the details of sponsorship amount it received in the last two years and the commission it paid to get them. The court also issued notice to Kirti Azad, a former BJP MP, seeking his response on HI’s plea challenging the CIC’s direction. The CIC directive had come on Azad’s plea, who had sought HI’s response on sponsorship details. — Agencies
