Mohali, January 31

There was no comeback from Punjab, after all. Their Ranji Trophy Group B match against Odisha ended in a six-wicket defeat on the third day as the Punjab batsmen were unable to get out of the hole they’d dug themselves in.

Odisha now climbed to eighth position on the points table with 14 points, four clear of the bottom-placed Saurashtra. The defeat leaves Punjab’s future in the tournament in uncertainty — they must win their last match against Delhi to make it to the quarterfinals.

Odisha’s Basant Mohanty finished with 10 for 85 for the match, six of the wickets coming in the second innings.

Punjab started the day at 37/4. Having been bowled out for 167 in the first innings, they’d managed to keep the lead of the visitors to just 16. However, they were effectively 21/4 when they resumed the innings today, and Yuvraj Singh had the big responsibility of taking his team to a respectable total.

Yuvraj did put up a fight, batting for over three hours for 56. However, only Gurkeerat Singh gave him a semblance of support. They added 61 for the sixth wicket in a little less than 13 overs. Gurkeerat went for his shots and hit 43 off only 45 balls even as Mohanty and Deepak Behere made life difficult for the batsmen. When Gurkeerat fell, Punjab were reduced to 98 for six.

Yuvraj was the ninth man out, with the team at 126. Manpreet Gony spanked a four and a six in his knock of 15 off 23 balls, but it was clear that Odisha were not going to face a huge target in their second innings.

Mohanty finished with 6/42, to go with the 4/43 he’d taken in the first innings. Behera had 3/44, taking his match haul to 7/91.

Set 126 to win, Odisha lost Girija Rout for a duck when he edged Siddharth Kaul to wicketkeeper Gitansh Khera. However, the rest of the batsmen kept their cool and though they lost wickets at regular intervals, there was no collapse that Punjab wanted. Govinda Poddar, the 23-year-old No. 3, remained unbeaten on 60 off 137 balls, with seven fours and one six.

In a Group C match in Agartala, Rishi Dhawan took 7/93 to help Himachal Pradesh bowl Tripura out for 346. Following on, Tripura were 20/0 at stumps on the fourth day. At Lahli in Rohtak, Haryana bowled Rajasthan out for 74 in their second innings, winning by an innings and 119 runs. — PTI
