Holding of international cricket matches in Guwahati in the future has come under serious question after a rock was thrown at the bus carrying the Australian team back to hotel from the Barsapara Cricket Stadium here last night.

The incident has brought shame to the people of Assam, especially the cricket lovers.

Meanwhile, city police have arrested two persons on suspicion of their involvement. They are being quizzed.

The incident occurred after Australia defeated India by eight wickets at the newly-built stadium to level the three-match T20I series 1-1. No player was, however, hurt in the incident, a city police source informed.

The report about the unsavory incident became viral after Australian opener Aaron Finch had tweeted a picture of a broken glass window of the bus.

No one was sitting at the window, when the rock hit the glass panel.

“Pretty scary having a rock thrown through the team bus window on the way back to the hotel!!” he wrote on Twitter. The post was also re-tweeted by stand-in captain David Warner.

Miscreants managed to throw the missile even though the Australian cricket team bus was accompanied by local police and security officials on their way back to the hotel.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal while condemning the incident directed DGP Mukesh Sahay to institute a thorough investigation into the shameful incident and book the culprits soon.

At the instruction of the chief minister, DGP Sahay along with chief secretary V K Pipersania and state Sports Minister N K Doley met the Australian cricket team at their hotel to take stock of the incident.

City police commissioner Hiren Nath too met the team members and officials at their hotel to get details of the incident. The DGP said everything would become clear after the investigation is over.

State Finance Minister Dr Himanta Bishwa Sarma while apologising for the incident on Twitter said such behaviour was unpardonable, the guilty would be punished.

Assam Cricket Association (ACA) has also lodged a complaint with the police regarding the incident.

This was the first time in seven years that Guwahati hosted an international cricket match. There was not a single unsavoury incident inside the stadium during the match.
