Rohtak, January 12

World Championships silver-medallist Sarjubala Devi (51kg) claimed the gold as well as the best boxer trophy even as the Railways emerged overall champions in the women’s boxing National Championships here today.

Sarjubala edged out Haryana's Ritu 3-2 to clinch her second successive national title, and Manipur's lone gold medal this year.

Former world and Asian champion L Sarita Devi (60kg), representing All India Police, also picked up a gold medal after beating Railway’s Pavitra in the summit clash.

The marquee clash of the day was between World Championships silver-medallist Sonia Lather, representing Railways, and world youth champion Shashi Chopra, turning up for Haryana, in the 57kg category. Sonia used her experience to outwit Shashi and walk away with the top honours.

Meena Kumari of All India Police took the 54kg gold after beating Manisha of Haryana.

Railways’ Rajesh Narwal won the flyweight (48kg) crown after defeating Monika of Uttar Pradesh.

Traditional powerhouse Haryana managed to claim just one gold medal this time, through Pooja Rani (75kg). Pooja got the better of Assam's Alari Boro in the summit clash.

Punjab’s Simranjit Kaur fell short of defending her 64kg title after going down against Pwilao Basumatary of Railways in the final. Railways finished with five gold and two bronze medals overall. — PTI
