Chandigarh beat Patiala in super over

Chandigarh, January 11

Chandigarh beat Patiala in the super over to register their first win in the ongoing Punjab Inter District T20 Cricket Championship at Government Model Senior Secondary School, Sector 26, here today. 

Needing 23 runs to win in the super over, after both teams were tied at 200, Patiala managed only 6/1 to hand 16-run victory to the hosts. Chandigarh had yesterday lost to Jalandhar by just one run in the super over.  

Earlier opting to field, Chandigarh bowlers failed to control Patiala as the visitors led by a 43-ball 75 by Ravi Inder Singh amassed 200/4 in their 20 overs. 

Patiala had a good start to their innings as openers Jeevanjot Singh and Ravi put on 67 runs for the first wicket. 

Jeevanjot was the first one to go, trapped in front of wickets by Bhagmender Singh for 20 off 15 balls.

Ravi and Sanvir Singh then raised 49 runs for the second wicket before the latter was castled by Nikhil for 37 off 25 balls.

Ravi and Anmolpreet shared a 33-run stand for the third wicket and stretched the total to 149/3 in 15.5 overs when Baghmender removed the opener. Ravi's 75-run knock was laced with nine boundaries and two sixes. 

Anmolpreet and Anmol Malhotra added another 45 runs before the former was caught by Arpit off Bhagmender for a whirlwind 50 off 27 balls.

Anmolpreet hit three boundaries and four huge sixes during his stay at the crease as Patiala finished their innings at 200/4.

In reply, Chandigarh lost openers Manan Vohra and Shivam Bhambri for just 17 runs. But a 108-run partnership between Jaskaran Singh Sohi and Arjit Singh brought the hosts back into the game.  

Arjit scored 44 off 33 balls before Sukhwinder Singh dismissed him to reduce the hosts to 125/3 in 14.1 overs.

Jaskaran Singh followed the suit a few runs later, caught by Kanwarpal off Sanvir for 88. His 54-ball knock was studded with 11 boundaries and three sixes.  

Gaurav Puri (22 off 12 balls) and Gaurav Gambhir (30 off 14 balls) were run out in their bid to overhaul the total.

Chandigarh reached 200/7 on the last ball of their innings as Gambhir was run out while going for a second run in a last ditch effort to win the match for his side. For Patiala, Beant Singh claimed 3/29.

Ludhiana win

In the second match played at the PCA Stadium in Mohali, Ludhiana registered a six-wicket win over Amritsar.

Batting first, Amritsar posted 118 in their 20 overs with Arush Sabharwal (31 off 20 balls), Abhinav Sharma (23 off 20 balls) and Sharad Lumba (23 off 25 balls) making vital contributions to the total. 

For Ludhiana, Simranjit Singh claimed 3/24, while Baltej Singh (2/12) and Sukhjinder Singh (2/23) grabbed two wickets apiece. 

Needing 119 for victory, Ludhiana had a disastrous start, losing opener Talwinder Singh on the first ball of their innings. He was caught by wicketkeeper Mohit Handa off medium pacer Kamal Passi. 

Ludhiana then lost Vaibhav Narang (10) and Kashish (15) to slump to 30/3 in 8.1 overs before skipper Gitansh Khera and Sandeep Singh got together to put on 88 runs for the fourth wicket in 10.1 overs. Sandeep was caught by Shivluv off Passi for 33. 

Khera, however, returned unbeaten on 57 off 42 balls. Nikhil Chaudhary was not on two Ludhiana reached home in the last over of the match.

For Amritsar, Passi grabbed 3/22, while Navneet Virk claimed 1/21.

Mohali triumph

The hosts Mohali, meanwhile, drubbed Jalandhar by 88 runs in the last match of the day at the PCA Stadium. 

Opting to bat, Mohali had a decent start to their innings as Uday Kaul and Subek Hayer put on 59 runs for the first wicket in 6.3 overs. 

Kaul was the first one to go, cleaned up by Pargat Singh for 43 off 23 balls. Hayer did not last long as he was dismissed for 11.

Mayank Sidana (32 off 27 balls) and Jaskaran Singh (50 off 21 balls) then helped the hosts reach a challenging 185/6 in 20 overs. 

For Jalandhar, Pargat Singh (2/24) and Rahul Sharma (2/21) claimed two wickets each.

In reply, Jalandhar were rattled early by speedster Manpreet Goni as he dismissed Mansab Gill (0) and Pargat Singh (6) in the space of 2.3. 

Taruwar Kohli (11) and Abhishek Gupta (0) also returned to the hut in a jiffy as the visitors slumped to 19/4 in 4.2 overs. 

Sarabjit Singh (29 off 38 balls) and Himanshu Satyawan (32 off 26 balls) tried to resurrect the Jalandhar innings with a 54-run stand for the fifth wicket before the former made a long walk back to the pavilion on 73.  

Left arm spinner Varun Khanna then dismissed Abhishek Gupta (0), Satyawan and Mandeep Singh (0) to the send Jalandhar hurtling down to 97 all out in 17.4 overs. 

For Mohali, Varun Khanna claimed 3/18, while Harmanvir (2/9) and Manpreet Goni (2/3) bagged two wickets apiece.
