BY way of pleading the cause of the depressed classes in India and securing a better treatment for them, the Bishop of Madras is reported to have spoken as follows recently: "I am speaking of India to Indians, and I hope, without injustice or offence, to press home to your conscience that you cannot condemn Germany for her treatment of Belgium, &c., and turn a deaf ear to the cry of the poor, the oppressed and the outcaste in your own land. Can we not look forward with hopefulness, as one result of the War, to a great movement for sound reform and social service? The comparison is unfortunate as coming from so well-meaning a friend. In the first place where is the parallel in India for German atrocities in Belgium? Secondly, India's depressed classes are on the same level as the slum population of Europe and when the latter get rid of their slums, India too will. India is doing her best to secure a better treatment to the depressed classes.
