Censorship of Newspapers.

THE latest report of the Administration of the Madras Presidency shows that immediately after the war the number of newspapers and periodicals increased from 117 to 212, but “as the war continued it became more and more difficult to elude the censors and to find sensational news to arouse the flagging interest of the readers” and 37 newspapers soon ceased to exist. It is possible that the rise in the price of paper has also contributed to this result. In any case the effect on the public can only be deplorable as newspapers are the only means of knowledge of current events to the people and when their activity is waning, ignorance reigns supreme, and its consequence is the circulation of rumours and inventions.
