IN connection with the new Defence of India Force, the Patrika discusses why compulsory service should be limited to non-Indian class only, and why it should not be extended to educated Indians who are in a position to appreciate and respond to the patriotic call. "We have heard whispered in high official circles," says our contemporary, "that Lord Chelmsford is personally not entirely opposed to the idea of universal compulsory military service in this country, irrespective of caste, colour or creed. But his Excellency does not feel sure whether such a measure will be acceptable to the people." The illiterate masses will not probably welcome compulsory enlistment, but the intelligent and educated class clearly knows what it is for and they will not shirk the patriotic duty.
