Depressed classes in Ujjain

Pandit Narayan Prasad, B.A., Headmaster, Madhav High School, Ujjain and Pandit Karta Kishen, settlement head clerk, have joined hands for some practical work among the depressed classes of Ujjain. They have without any fuss started a school for the education of the children of these classes. With B. Ghaus Ali, Manager of the Akbar Cotton Press of the station, they constituted themselves into a working committee and appealed to leading gentlemen for sympathy and support and met with generous response. They opened a school in January 1914 and in February they were able to show 43 boys on the rolls with an average attendance of 22; and in December following they had the satisfaction of seeing the number on rolls increase to 56 with the average attendance at 42. In ten months' time they have been able to turn out about a dozen boys "who can fairly read and write Hindi and compete with students.
