BURMA is one of the provinces that suffers greatly from an excessive rate of infant morality. In Mandalay last year, it is stated 2,117 children out of 5,000 born died within the first year of age. The Society for the prevention of Infant mortality, which has been doing excellent work, will soon lose Mrs. Mathews who was prominent worker, as she is going away on the retirement of her husband. The work of the Society consists in the provision of a few midwives for poor Burmese mothers and free visits by honorary lady visitors. A special committee should be appointed to enquire into the causes of excessive infant mortality.
