Extremists and Moderates

MUCH is being said in a section of the Press even now about Moderates and Extremists. If the last Congress has not opened men’s eyes to the unreality of the distinction between the two, it is difficult to say what else could be expected to do so. Those who have read the speeches on self-government resolution will have noticed that there was literally an exchange of role between the Extremist and the Moderate, as the two terms used to be understood when the differences between them were most substantial than they are now. Mr. Tilak has always been regarded as the undisputed leader of the so-called Extremist party ever since that party came to be formed. Similarly Babu Surendranath Banerjea has been one of the greatest leaders of the Moderate party. Yet what did one see? Mr. Banerjea made no secret of his wish that the Congress had gone further than it was going.
