Famine in Rajputana

DISTRESSING accounts of famine in the States of Jodhpur, Bikanir and Jeypore are being received and the chief sufferers are the labouring class and cattle. For want of fodder and water thousands of cattle are said to have perished round the region of the Aravali hills, though many are being dispatched to places where fodder and water are available. In this connection it is gratifying to learn that the "Gokashta Nivrani Sabha" of Bhatinda have opened centres of relief for cattle. About 7,000 bhigas of grazing land are taken up in the Karnal District for free grazing and about 3,500 cattle have been sent there from the affected parts. Similar protective works will, we hope, be undertaken by the charitable public. The Rajputana States also have adopted various relief measures and supply grain to the poor.
