IN a recent speech Mr. Taft, ex- US President, paid a magnificent tribute to Britain's services in the war. "We are living in comfort and luxury." he said, "and have lost comparatively few men. We are not living in the valley of the shadow of death, as has been Great Britain, to whom we owe our liberty." This is high praise, and is fully deserved. Mr. Taft recalls how a hundred years ago Britain rid the world ever saw and did it by sacrifice and holding out, and says that her function in this war is the same. It is wonderful how history some times repeats itself no only in the deeper things, but in the very manner of their happening. It was in the second decade of the nineteenth century that the great Napcleonic war was brought to a triumphant close by British pertinacity.
